Prof. (Dr.) S. B. Mujumdar is the Founder and President of Symbiosis – a multi-national, multi-lingual, and multidisciplinary educational institution of repute. A distinguished academician and educationist, he is also the Chancellor of Symbiosis International University (SIU), a Deemed University located at Pune.

In his Master’s Degree (M.Sc.) in Botany, he stood first class first with distinction in Pune University. He went on to obtain his Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Microbiology from Pune University.

The Government of India has conferred on Dr. S B Mujumdar ‘Padma Shri’ in 2005 and ‘Padma Bhushan’ in 2012 for his outstanding contribution to the field of education. Dr. Mujumdar is also a recipient of many awards/honors viz. the ‘Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar’ (2003), FIE Foundation Puraskar (2006), Pune Municipal Corporation’s ‘Roll of Honor for Life-Time Achievement’ (2006), Punya Bhushan Award (2009), Top Management Club Pune’s “Excellence in Education” Award, the Rotary Club of Pune’s ‘Service Excellence Recognition Award (SERA)’, The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow, Giant International Life Time Achievement Award, Lion Gaurav Puraskar, Pune Festival Award and many others. Recently, the Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth has conferred on him the ‘D. Litt.’ in 2016.

At the same time, students completing graduation from conventional universities are unable to find jobs due to a lack of skills as per industry needs. To bridge this gap the newly established Symbiosis Skills and Professional University offers degree programs as well as short term courses at all levels in high growth sectors.

We have entered into collaborations with top industries in high growth such as retail, logistics, manufacturing, automotive, construction, beauty, and wellness, etc.

The curriculum has been designed by industry partners. We are also providing high-end skill training labs & workshops with specialized machinery for hands-on training. Industry partners are setting up retail stores, mock banks, finance plaza & automobile training facilities for providing real-life experience to students. I am confident that this unique skills & open university model & state of the art infrastructure supported by expert faculty will create a world-class experience for students leading to gainful employment & entrepreneurship.

Dr. Swati Mujumdar completed her MBA, M.S. (USA), and Ph.D. (Skill Development & Vocational Education). She worked for 12 years in top IT companies in the USA before returning to India and joining her father Dr. S.B. Mujumdar, Founder & President of, Symbiosis in furthering the cause of education.

Dr. Swati has been doing research for the past many years in the area of skill development and vocational education and developed a unique model of a ‘Skills University’ suitable for our country, which is in line with our Honorable Prime Minister’s mission of Skill India. Because of Dr. Swati’s passion for skill development, Symbiosis, under her leadership, has established two skill development universities namely Symbiosis Skills & Professional University (SSPU) at Pune, Maharashtra, and Symbiosis University of Applied Sciences (SUAS) at Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

The Symbiosis Skills Universities are India’s first residential Skill Universities offering skill-based courses at all levels from certificate to degree programs in high growth sectors such as Mechatronics, Automobile, Civil Engineering (Construction Engineering & Management), Retail, Banking, Finance & Insurance, Beauty & Wellness, Ports & Terminals management, Logistics, Media Management and Film Making etc in line with industry needs. Dr. Swati has partnered with top industries and foreign universities to provide skill training and experiential learning to students pursuing various courses at the University. She is a thought leader in the domain of skill education and its integration with higher education.

In 2011, Dr. Swati chaired the Vocational Education & Skill Development Committee of Govt. of Maharashtra for defining the State’s Policy in this regard. Dr. Swati has been doing research in the establishment of self-finance / private universities. She was also a member of the working group of MHRD and Planning Commission for providing inputs in the area of Vocational Education and Skill Development to GOI for the XII Five year plan. Dr. Swati has been a recipient of several awards and is invited as a keynote speaker in national and international forums.
