About Symbiosis
Symbiosis, founded in 1971 by visionary educationist Dr. Shantaram Balwant Mujumdar, Symbiosis was established with the mission of creating a “home away from home” for international students in Pune. Guided by the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—“The World is One Family”—Symbiosis has spent over five decades promoting global harmony through quality education.
A former Head of the Department of Botany at Fergusson College, Dr. S. B. Mujumdar was honored with the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan for his contributions to education and social integration. Most recently, in 2024 he received the Fergusson Gaurav Puraskar as a Distinguished Alumnus, further recognizing his lifelong dedication to inclusive education.
Today, Symbiosis comprises 44+ institutes across multiple disciplines, with campuses in major Indian cities and in Dubai, and a vibrant presence spanning 85+ countries. Symbiosis, serves over 45,000 on-campus students and more than 2.5 lakh distance learning students, continuing its legacy of academic excellence and global inclusivity.
Symbiosis Open Education Society (SOES), A society dedicated to quality distance education, Symbiosis Open Education Society (SOES) was registered in 2008 under the Societies Registration Act and the Maharashtra Public Trust Act. Its mission is to promote and disseminate knowledge through open and distance learning, provide skill development and lifelong learning opportunities, and contribute to individual and societal growth.
SOES oversees key institutions including Symbiosis Skills and Professional University (SSPU), Symbiosis Centre for Distance Learning (SCDL), and Symbiosis Junior College of Arts, Science & Commerce (SJC). Established in 1994, SCDL was founded with the vision of “Reaching the Unreached”.
